Game of the Week Nominees: Playoffs Rd. Three

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Round Three of the Georgia high school football playoffs kick off this Friday and there are some great matchups, including 11Alive and Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net's Game of the Week between Dutchtown and Chattahoochee.

The 11-1 Bulldogs travel to play undefeated Chattahoochee. On paper, this matchup will be a battle of top-notch offense and top-notch defense.

Dutchtown's defense has not allowed a point this postseason and has notched five shutouts throughout the year. They have yet to give up more than 14 points per game. Comparatively, Chattahoochee has not scored less than 31 points in a game this season.

On offense, Dutchtown has yet to score a touchdown in either of their first two playoff games; all 18 of their points have come off of the foot of kicker Ryan Kay. Last week, Dutchtown beat Glynn Academy 3-0.

GDOT Speeding Up Spending To Help Create Jobs.

This week the State Transportation Board voted to accelerate 350-million dollars in construction projects that will save and generate jobs, while improving roads all across Georgia.

The money is cash that GDOT already has on hand.  They are state funds that will be spent on top of other funds for a variety of projects in every corner of Georgia.  By moving up the date for consideration of bids by about two months, GDOT will create more jobs sooner than originally planned.

Under Armour Athlete of the Week: Week 12 Winner

HOSCHTON, GA -- All votes are in for 11Alive and Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net's Under Armour Athlete of the Week and the winner is Mill Creek quarterback John Russ.

Russ was nominated for his three-touchdown performance against Duluth in the final week of the regular season. In that game, the Mill Creek signal caller was 17-for-22 with over 200 yards passing. Russ and the Hawks clinched a playoff spot with their 34-23 win over Duluth. They have since advanced to the second round.

Tune into MyATL-TV at 10:30 pm this Friday to see Russ featured on 11Alive's HighSchoolSports.net.

Starr's Mill running back Zach Laskey was also nominated for the Under Armour Athlete of the Week award. The senior back rushed for 132 yards on 13 carries in his team's 24-7 win over Griffin for the Region 3-4A championship.

Under Armour Athlete of the Week: Week 11 Winner

ALPHARETTA, GA -- This week's winner of 11Alive and Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net's Under Armour Athlete of the Week is only a sophomore, but his performance in Week 10 was good enough to beat out two seniors in the online vote.

Alpharetta wide receiver Carlos Burse caught three touchdown passes en route to his team's 48-28 road win over Centennial. Burse, who is also a talented basketball player, will try to help the Raiders win their first playoff game in school history this Friday.

To get that playoff win, Burse and company will have to face off against another Athlete of the Week nominee: Brookwood linebacker Cameron Lynch.

Gang Awareness Resource for Parents

Local Fayette County law enforcement agencies have launched a useful web resource for parents around the county, the new Fayette Gang Website.

The website, www.fayettegangs.org, is being used to educate citizens on the different aspects of gang lifestyle and its effects on the community. The website contains a description and picture of the hand signals of the major gangs in the area. And gives parents and citizens signs to look for when dealing with their children or the children of the neighborhood, along with prevention tips and a place to report incidents believed to be gang related or report graffiti found in the community.

The website is a partnership among the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Fayetteville Police Department, Peachtree City Police Department, Tyrone Police Department, and the Marshal's Office.
