Elementary Grand Prix Race Series begins Oct. 4

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -- The Peachtree City Rotary Club has announced the 2014-15 lineup of its popular Elementary Grand Prix Race Series.

The series was started in 2005 as a way to curb childhood obesity in Peachtree City and Fayette County. Every elementary school in the county hosts a 5K to encourage students and their families to run and to lead active, healthy lives.

Last year's series raised about $100,000 for the rotary club and local schools.

Participants earn points at each race; the higher they place in their age groups, the more points they earn. The top three finishers in each age group will receive plaques and be recognized at a special rotary club reception in May.

PROBE College Fair coming to Fayette

TYRONE, Ga. -- The popular PROBE College Fair will stop in Tyrone this week, giving high school students an opportunity to speak directly to representatives from their favorite colleges and universities.

The fair will be Thursday, Sept. 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sandy Creek High School.

A number of schools in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee and the Carolinas, will be represented. See a complete list of participating colleges.

Walk With a Doc continues through November at Drake Field

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga.  – Based on popular demand, Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s Walk With a Doc program, which began in the spring, returns to Drake Field and will continue monthly through November. All members of the community are invited to join us to walk and talk with a Piedmont doctor.

The next walk, led by physicians and midwives from Southern Crescent Women’s Healthcare, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Drake Field at City Hall, 155 Willowbend Road, Peachtree City.

“Walk with a Doc has been a very successful program,” said Debbie Britt, executive director, community and public relations at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. “We’ve had very positive feedback from participants who have enjoyed talking to the doctors about general health topics while taking an early morning stroll.”

Race this weekend: R(un) for One

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Georgia's R(un) for One 5K and 1-mile fun run will be held this weekend in Fayette County.

The race will be off and running on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. Online registration closes Thursday at 9 p.m., so runners are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Those who wait until race day to register are not guaranteed a T-shirt.

Saturday's race will begin at Woolsey Baptist Church in Fayetteville and wind down to Lake Horton. All runners will be treated to a post-race celebration with food, music and activities.

Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group, as well as the three overall male and female winners.

Registration for the 5K is $30 in advance and $35 on race day. The fun run is $10 in advance and $15 later. Proceeds will be given to (un)adopted, a charity that benefits orphans in impoverished countries.

'Fat Sick & Nearly Dead 2' coming to metro Atlanta theaters

(WXIA) -- A sequel to the popular health documentary Fat Sick & Nearly Dead will be screened at several Atlanta-area movie theaters next month.

Fat Sick & Nearly Dead 2 will play Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

The first film, released in 2010, followed Australian filmmaker Joe Cross in his quest to lose 100 pounds by consuming fruit and vegetable juice. In the second movie, Cross and a team of experts will explore broader themes of diet and health.

Cross credited his juice-based diet with helping him lose a considerable amount of weight and rid his body of a chronic auto-immune disease. He has since founded Reboot with Joe, which supports people in their decision to make positive dietary and lifestyle changes.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- The Fayette Pregnancy Resource Center will hold a 5K fundraiser this weekend.

The Run for Life will be Saturday, June 28 at 8 a.m.

Registration is $25 in advance and can be completed at the race's Eventbrite page. Race day registration opens at 7 a.m. and costs $30. There is also a free tot trot for children ages 12 and younger.

The Fayette Pregnancy Resource Center is located at 360 East Lanier Avenue in Fayetteville.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital to host blood drive

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Piedmont Newnan Hospital and The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on Tuesday, July 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Conference Room 2 of the hospital. The American Red Cross is seeking to increase blood donations during the summer months, a time when donations typically drop, as part of its campaign, “100 Days of Summer. 100 Days of Hope.”

To give blood, a donor must be: in good health; age 17 years or older; weigh at least 110 pounds; not have donated blood within the last 56 days; and, show a valid photo I.D. It is recommended donors eat a snack or meal within two hours prior to donating blood.
