Race this weekend: Old Courthouse 5K

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Fayetteville will continue a longstanding tradition with this weekend's Civitans Old Courthouse 5K.

The race will be held Saturday, June 14 at Fayette Senior Services. Race day registration opens at 7:15 a.m., and the run will begin at 8 a.m.

All runners will receive cotton T-shirts and will be entered into a drawing to win prizes from race sponsors, including Chick-fil-A, Delta Community Credit Union, Dickey's Barbecue Pit and Kroger.

Pre-registration is $25; it costs $30 to sign up on race day. Proceeds from the Old Courthouse 5K will go to several local organizations such as the Joseph Sams School, Fayette County Special Olympics and Southwest Christian Care.

(WXIA) -- Sarah Jones makes up the fabric of new Hollywood. She had a promising film career ahead of her -- until a tragic accident cut her life short.

Jones was hit by a train on the set of "Midnight Rider" near Savannah.

Robert Wilson wasn't a part of that production, but he worked with Jones on her very first job.

"Just an incredible spirit, an incredible human being. She's somebody that came on the set and made the day better and I think that's why there's such a tremendous outcry," he said of Jones.

Race this weekend: Goliath Mud Challenge

TYRONE, Ga. -- A race that past participants have called "awesome" and "the best event ever" will return in 2014.

The Goliath Mud Challenge will be held Saturday, May 31 on property owned by Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Goliath challenges teams to complete 18 obstacles on a 5K course, working together to make it to the end. Runners begin the race in waves, depending on their skill levels.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. It costs $65 to participate; military, first responder and police runners can sign up for only $50. There is also a $25 one-mile option for children.

Free sorority information session for high school girls

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- High school juniors and seniors who are interested in joining sororities are invited to attend a free information session in Peachtree City this weekend.

The Atlanta Southern Crescent Alumnae Panhellenic Association (ASCAPA) will host the talk on Sunday, May 18 at 1 p.m. Jill Moore, the director of Greek life at Auburn University, will be the guest speaker.

Teens who are serious about rushing sororities when they get to college, as well as those who simply want more information about Greek life are welcome to attend. Topics to be covered include what to expect during rush, how to choose the best sorority and some of the benefits of sorority membership.

Junior Police Academy returns this summer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- The Fayetteville Police Department will hold its 12th annual Junior Police Academy this summer.

The academy begins Monday, July 28 and ends Friday, Aug. 1. Participants will spend their days with veteran cops, aiding in such police activities as traffic stops and crime scene processing. They will also learn what it takes to join and succeed in a police department.

Junior Police Academy is open to rising 7th graders through 10th graders. Applications are now available at Bennett's Mill Middle School on Lester Road and the Fayetteville Police Department, and should be completed no later than Monday, June 2.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Inman Elementary School will hold its 6th annual off-road run this weekend.

The fun will be held Saturday, Apr. 19 at 8 p.m. Registration is $25 and can be completed at active.com.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."
