Nominees needed for 11Alive Community Service Awards

(WXIA) -- Every year, 11Alive News honors extraordinary metro Atlanta residents who make a daily difference in the community.

The annual Community Service Awards recognize some of the area's unsung heroes.

11Alive is accepting nominees for the 39th annual Community Service Awards. This year's dinner and awards ceremony will be held Saturday, Apr. 22. Proceeds benefit a local charity; the 2014 recipient is the Ron Clark Academy.

To nominate a deserving person, visit 11Alive.com/CSA and click on the nomination form link at the top of the page. The deadline is Jan. 10.

'Be a Santa to a Senior' this holiday season

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Many Christmas and holiday-themed charities focus on children, but Peachtree City is also remembering the elderly in the community.

Volunteers with the Peachtree City Police Department are hosting Be a Santa to a Senior to support members of the Greatest Generation, some of whom experience loneliness during the holiday season.

To donate, visit the police department and remove an ornament from the tree in the lobby. Each ornament features a holiday wish list from a local senior.

Donations can be left in the collection box at the police station. All contributions must be unwrapped; a wrapping party will be held Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Heritage Christian Church in Fayetteville.

Peachtree City named best metro Atlanta town for families

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- A new study names Peachtree City the best Atlanta-area town and second-best Georgia city for young families.

NerdWallet compiled the top 10 list of places to raise families in Georgia. The survey analyzed such factors as good public schools, the cost of living and the town's prosperity. It cited Peachtree City's educational system and golf cart paths as the main reasons for its ranking.

Evans, a suburb of Augusta, topped this year's list, which features six metro Atlanta towns.

11Alive helps Smart Lunch, Smart Kid

ATLANTA -- 11Alive News employees rolled up their sleeves Wednesday morning and assembled 400 bagged lunches for children in need.

This is the second year 11Alive has helped Action Ministries' Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program.

Smart Lunch, Smart Kid provides nutritious meals in the summertime for children who normally rely on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year.

WellCare and Gas South employees joined the 11Alive team in making sandwiches and putting together lunch bags. Each Smart Lunch, Smart Kid meal consists of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, fruit snacks and a bottle of water.

Action Ministries hopes to feed at least 200,000 children across north Georgia through the 2013 Smart Lunch, Smart Kid outreach.

HAMPTON, Ga. -- The Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center has joined the Pinwheels for Prevention movement.

Volunteers and staff members placed 455 pinwheels on the center's front lawn in recognition of Prevent Child Abuse Month.
