Georgia HS Playoffs: Rd. 3 Previews and Predictions

ATLANTA -- 11Alive takes a look at Georgia's high school playoff games and their predicted outcomes with Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net and Massey Matchups.

Class 5A

Mill Creek at Colquitt County: By winning last week, Colquitt County proved last year's semifinals appearance was no fluke and Mill Creek proved their first round upset win over Etowah was no fluke. Which team will keep it going? Fourth-seeded Mill Creek will have to play three-seeded Colquitt County on the road, but the Hawks have won four straight road games over Peachtree Ridge, Duluth, Etowah and South Gwinnett. Colquitt County's home record looks about like their away record. The Packers are 4-3 at home and 3-2 on the road. Massey Prediction: Mill Creek wins 40-34

Grayson at Valdosta: Grayson has one of the best defenses in the state, but Valdosta's offense can put up points (their 64-point win over Brunswick comes to mind). Valdosta is coming off of a three-point win over McEachern and Grayson upset North Gwinnett 23-19. Massey Prediction: Grayson wins 26-20

Collins Hill at Lowndes: After starting the season 1-3, Collins Hill is on an eight-game winning streak. The 10-2 Vikings lost 10-7 to 5-5 Tift County four weeks ago, but Lowndes looks to be back on track after beating Newnan 38-14 in Round Two. Collins Hill has shown they can hang with anybody in the state, but will they merely keep the Lowndes game close or can the Eagles win and appear in their program's second semifinals? Massey Prediction: Collins Hill wins 21-20

Hillgrove at Brookwood: To say Hillgrove has won two tough road games to make it to the quarterfinals would be an understatement. The Hawks had to beat Stephenson at Hallford and then go play Camden County at Kingsland. Now, Hillgrove has another road test against 11-1 Brookwood, who has won nine straight games. The Broncos beat Alpharetta 44-13 in Round One and topped Norcross 34-24 last week. Massey Prediction: Brookwood wins 35-14

Class 4A

Statesboro at Kell: Both teams are coming off of big wins; Statesboro edged Griffin 34-28 and Kell beat Flowery Branch 21-13. Kell has had the better season so far, going 12-0 with one of 4A's more difficult schedules. Statesboro is 10-2 with losses to Liberty County and Evans; they are on a four-game winning streak. Kell, only playing football since 2003, has never played a school from south of Macon. Massey Prediction: Kell wins 32-7

Dutchtown at Chattahoochee: Dutchtown has yet to give up a point; Chattahoochee has not scored below 31 points in any game this season. Massey Prediction: Chattahoochee wins 27-14

Ware County at Tucker: There is no doubt that undefeated Tucker will be the best team Ware County has played this postseason. The Tigers have had little trouble with any team outside of Marist, but the Ware County Gators have quietly won seven games in a row. Massey Prediction: Tucker wins 31-17

East Paulding at Starr's Mill: East Paulding is coming off of a 24-10 upset win over Clarke Central, but now they face a dangerous, undefeated Starr's Mill team. 10-2 East Paulding has seen mixed results on the road. They lost both of their games on the road, but beat Clarke Central in Athens. Massey Prediction: Starr's Mill wins 21-20

Class 3A

Peach County at Grady: Peach County has won 27 straight games and is coming off of a 33-point shutout win over Thomson in Round Two. The Trojans will be on the road against athletic Grady, which has won 10 straight games and is four points away from an undefeated season. Massey Prediction: Peach County wins 35-23

Monroe Area at Sandy Creek: Undefeated Sandy Creek was expected to contend for a 3A title right at the beginning of the season. The defending 4A champs returned several starters from last year's team and were moving down a classification. Monroe Area also moved down from 4A, but respect has been a little harder to come by for the Purple Hurricanes. They went a combined 0-20 in 2008 and 2009. Now, they are 11-1. Massey Prediction: Sandy Creek wins 35-14

Cairo at Carrollton: If the 3A brackets were drawn up a little differently, this could have been the state championship game. Instead, this game will have to settle for being one of the state's biggest quarterfinal matchups. Cairo is stellar on defense. The Syrupmakers have only given up 58 points all season long, including six shutouts. Carrollton has shut out five teams and has scored 35 points per game or more in every game except for their 14-7 win over St. Pius last week. Massey Prediction: Carrollton wins 30-14

Cedar Grove at Burke County: Cedar Grove is 8-4, but with wins over Cartersville and Gainesville, the Saints will have the full attention of 10-2 Burke County, who just avenged their earlier loss to Baldwin by beating the Braves 21-20 last week. Massey Prediction: Burke County wins 31-28

Class 2A

Thomasville at Carver-Columbus: Having beaten perennial champion Buford earlier in the season, Carver-Columbus has long been considered a favorite to win 2A. The Tigers are 12-0 and have won every game by at least two scores. 9-3 Thomasville fought past Jefferson County and Tattnall County in the first two rounds and the Bulldogs have played two 2A quarterfinal teams close (Fitzgerald and Cook). Massey Prediction: Carver-Columbus wins 27-6

Fitzgerald at Calhoun: Undefeated Calhoun has not played a close four-quarter game all season long. Fitzgerald has lost two games, but the Purple Hurricanes play a tougher schedule than the Yellow Jackets. Both teams have advanced to at least the semifinals for two consecutive years. Massey Prediction: Calhoun wins 35-21

Cook at Buford: A rematch of last year's quarterfinals, this game should be closer than last season's, which Buford won 26-0. Undefeated Cook stands a good chance at ending Buford's 2A title run. Massey Prediction: Buford wins 34-20

Lovett at Brooks County: Both four seeds, Lovett and Brooks County are truly representative of the tough regions they play in. Lovett's Region 6 saw all four teams advance to the second round of the playoffs, including Buford. Brooks County's Region 1 is 8-0 so far this postseason. Lovett handed Elbert County its second loss of the season in Round One and beat 10-2 Dade County 42-6 in Round Two. Brooks County beat undefeated Swainsboro in the first round and topped Vidalia 21-12 in Round Two. Massey Prediction: Lovett wins 34-14

Class Single-A

ECLA at Clinch County: Both teams are undefeated, but Clinch County has been more dominant in their 12 games, winning every contest by 19 points or more.  ELCA, whose biggest win was over Wesleyan, has scored 49 points or more per game six times this season. Massey Prediction: ELCA wins 31-28

ECI at Wilkinson County: 10-2 Emanuel County Institute has won seven straight games, including two difficult road games against Seminole County and Marion County in the playoffs. Wilkinson County, which has played one of Single-A's easier draws, has won eight games straight. They get the Bulldogs at home. Massey Prediction: ECI wins 28-21

Savannah Christian at Lincoln County: Fourth-seeded Savannah Christian is 11-1, having only lost to 8-3 Calvary Day. Last week, the Raiders' 37-6 road win over Charlton County was impressive. 10-2 Lincoln County has only lost to one Georgia team (Wilkinson County) this season. They beat 9-2 Pace Academy 49-6 in Round One and 10-2 Darlington 21-17 in Round Two. Massey Prediction: Lincoln County wins 18-14

Wilcox County at Wesleyan: Wilcox County beat Wesleyan on their way to a Single-A championship last season. Both teams are 11-1 and have only lost to undefeated teams; Wilcox County lost to Clinch County and Wesleyan lost to ELCA. Massey Prediction: Wesleyan wins 34-28
